Housing Market can benefit with Energy Saving

posted by enigin in Genreal

With the recession denting peoples pockets all around the world - no one has been immune. In the last few days the news channels have reported a rise in the number of mortgages in the UK. This includes no doubt many who have become landlords of properties and of course talking about those landlords already in business, and very possibly struggling.

A recent article online highlighted why it was important for landlords to put energy efficiency first. Most likely something they don’t think about as it appears to not directly affect them, only their tenants.

As the recession continues many people are looking for ways to save money and make money! Many landlords are in a position of needing to make their properties more attractive to tenants, and ensure they see a return on investment.

Not saving enough Energy

In the news recently there has been a few articles discussing energy use in Pakistan. A new program has been put in place to encourage marketplaces and shopping areas to close early and government offices were closing for holidays and restrictions on their use of air conditioning.

These meadures have been taken due to power shortages - forcing action, but we see similar direction globally for us all to consider how and when we use energy.

Enigin Spring Clean To-Do List

posted by enigin in Uncategorized

Finally we are getting longer, brighter and warmer days. It has felt like a long time coming and so pleased it is finally here. Enigin started the spring clean at yesterday, what a mammoth task. And we found it a perfect opportunity to add some extra “to-do” items to contribute in saving some energy pounds now and as, hopefully, summer starts to heat up.

So I thought I would share them with you, many of these we have put in place within the workplace but can be done at home to make you personally more efficient.

  • We found that as the office is heating up and we are enjoying the spring day through open windows - ensure that any heating systems are shut off. A thermostat will call for heat when set at a temperature higher then outside air.
  • If having windows cleaned - check they’re in good condition. Air escapes quickly from loose, leaky of single paned windows.
  • If generally cleaning, vacuuming and dusting, remember fridges! Underneath and behind, dust builds up on cooling coils and they run less efficiently. Dust or wipe light bulbs. Clean bulbs provide more light.
  • When washing clothes, adjust the water level to match the load and use cold water as often as possible. Try hanging clothes outside to dry in the spring sunshine rather then use a tumble dryer.
  • Install a programmable thermostat. They provide efficient heating, important for central air conditioning, offering convenience, accuracy and comfort. And can save around £90 a year.
Take just a few extra steps this spring and save money while saying goodbye to winter!

Do one thing - save the earth the Enigin way

Energy efficiency, energy saving, green energy etc etc, it is making its place in the world today. Governments and business, and homeowners are realising the importance of it for the future. So why don’t we also have a go.

Individually we can be a powerful engine for change, by making ourselves healthier, more aware and save ourselves money. How? Follow these 10 simple steps that make that big difference.

1. Use less paper. Instead use re-usable cloths for paper towels and napkins.

2.  Buy shade-grown, fair trade coffee and chocolate. Look for products certified by the Rainforest Alliance or labelled “Bird Friendly”.

3. Lower your household thermostat below 70 degrees in winter, and raise it above 72 in summer. For more information see the American Council for Energy Efficient Economy. (aceee.org)

4. Replace light bulbs and appliances with Energy Star approved models.

5. Plug electronics into power strips and switch them off when not in use!

6. Eat more fresh fruit and vegetables and less meat! Livestock production is responsible for 18% of greenhouse gas emissions.

7. Rid your home and garden of synthetic pesticides.

8. Install Water efficient fixtures such as faucet aerators, shower heads and low flow toilets.

9. Cut back on plastics.

10. Drive less, drive sensibly. Follow the speed limit and keep your engine tuned and tires properly inflated, can help save on fuel and greenhouse gas emissions.

So maybe we could all have a go at following these simple daily steps and have our part in saving the earth today.

Enigin - have a home energy audit!

posted by enigin in Uncategorized

Enigin plc had new energy technologies designed for businesses but today we are talking to you at home.

Ever wonder why your electric bills are so high? Did you know you could do something within your home to change this? Try out home energy auditing.

This would be conducted in your own home, and as a result the problem areas where your home is losing energy will be pointed out. It will allow you to recognise how effective your heating system is and also your cooling system, if you have one. But not only will it save on your energy bills - but your water as well. It can give you suggestions on how to conserve hot water you use on a daily basis.

You can now hire an expert home energy auditor - yes they are out there. Or you can actually do it yourself. The auditor would obviously cost but you would know he is making a thorough audit of your home energy usage, using a number of equipments and techniques to find the report correctly.

Or use the do-it-yourself guides to home auditing for a quick and FREE way to do it! For a quick a easy do-it-yourself quide see our sister blog searchenigin.com.

Now I am off to complete my home energy audit - could do with those few extra pennies.
